Working Together to Feed our Students

Central Valley and Mead

There are so many hardworking Education Support Professionals across the state working to feed and support our students during these difficult times. In Spokane, Central Valley School District’s nutrition service employees, transportation drivers, and transportation assistants have been working hard to provide breakfast and lunch to the students in the community. Of the districts’ many schools, there are three kitchens that are being used to prepare meals and 15 sites where bus drivers deliver the meals.

At Evergreen Middle School alone, they produce approximately 2000 meals every day. A Spokane employee helps out the community by delivering fresh produce to the site which allows the hardworking staff the ability to prepare and package healthy meals for the students of Central Valley.

Aside from preparing meals, the employees in Mead School District provide quality care for the children of first responders in the area. At Mt. Spokane High School and Northwood Middle School, they prepare between 900 – 1200 meals on a daily basis. These are distributed by bus and handed out by transportation, nutrition services, and paraeducator employees.

With the recent changes to working conditions and expectations due to the coronavirus, they are forced to overcome many unique challenges. Some of the biggest challenges faced by our nutrition members is that many of them are working in a new kitchen they aren’t familiar with, and they are having to prepare, cook, and package thousands of meals even when there are food shortages and limited storage. These are just a few of the challenges that the general public may not realize they face each day. But one of the hardest things they face is that they don’t get to interact with the students. They miss getting the opportunity to serve the food they worked so hard to prepare. And just like the teachers, Education Support Professionals miss seeing the smiling faces each day and can’t wait to get back to the best part of their jobs—supporting our students.

Thank you to all the hard working members and essential employees of PSE in Central Valley and Mead! You are #ESPHeroes!
