In your words

  • “As a paraeducator, I can hardly make it from pay day to pay day. Sometimes it’s a choice between medication that I need for diabetes or heart condition and making a choice of putting groceries back. Health care is too expensive, especially when we make so little.”
  • “Half my paycheck goes to medical insurance. I struggle to live in a one-bedroom apartment. I get monthly food stamps, no basic cable. My rent is $600. My last paycheck was $609. Could you be comfortable?”
  • “I have worked for the school district nearly 15 years. My rate of pay has increased slightly over the years but has not kept pace with my insurance costs. Many of my fellow paraeducators have left to get better pay. Please help me stay in the profession I love and am good at!”
  • “I make about $900 a month for my job as a computer lab/classroom assistant. My medical insurance takes about $750 of that. This leaves me about $150 a month. So I work two jobs. Oftentimes this means I have to work night and day seven days a week.”
  • “I have worked for the school district for 21 years as a paraeducator. I believe I am good at my job. My husband is a farmer, so he has no insurance through his occupation so I cover him and previously I covered our children (who are now grown-up). My paycheck for one month is $635 for a month of 35 hours a week because of the amount deducted for insurance!”
