Tell PSE what you think about Gregoire’s budget cut options

Today, Gov. Gregoire announced incredibly painful, all-cuts options to balance a $2 billion budget shortfall.

Tell PSE what you think about the cuts below.

Think about the impact of these cuts to our communities:
•    No more school buses!
•    A school year shortened by five days
•    Local levy assistance reduced by half
•    Increased class sizes
•    All-day kindergarten eliminated
•    And more cuts to employee compensation, including another 1% pay cut and increased health insurance costs.

For colleges and universities, the governor proposed a 20% across-the-board funding cut, plus 10 more furlough days and higher insurance costs.

Without new revenue, these proposed cuts could affect our schools – students, families, and classified workers – in unspeakable ways.

The future of our state depends on the choices we make now. All school workers have to start talking about the impact of these cuts. And we have to start talking seriously about raising needed revenue, because Washington families need quality schools more than special interests need their tax breaks.
